The Roman Empire at its maximum extent.

The Roman Empire at its maximum extent.

The Roman Empire at its maximum extent was under Trajan (red). It included even Assyria-a province established by him but its exact hictorical borders have not being established.

At various times the Empire included more territory lost by the time Trajan ruled like the province of Germania in Magna Germania under Varus lost after the annihilation of him and his three legions in the Teutoburg forest.

In Britain general Agricola devastated the local Briton-Celtic tribes who could not put up a defense against him even after joining together. The Roman themselves abandonded Northern Britain above the Hadrian Wall and moved the legions to other parts of the Empire where they were more needed.
